Last year’s races drew more than 12,000 racing animals and their cheering owners.

Each race will begin with a brief tutorial from a Petco companion animal specialist or store manager on how to keep a hamster or small animal healthy and happy. Topics include feeding the right food, the necessity of fresh water, the importance of exercise, chew toys and understanding a hamster’s nocturnal nature.

First-place winners at each store will win a medal and a Kaytee Forti Diet Pro Health Small Animal Starter Kit, complete with food, bedding, a treat and a chew. Second-place winners will receive a ribbon and a Super Pet Hamburger Crispy Combo Chew. Third-place racers will receive a finalist ribbon and a Kaytee Hamster Single Honey Treat Stick.

All participants will receive a sticker reading "My pet ran in the Hamster Ball Derby.”

Participants must bring their own hamsters and hamster balls. Race registration is free; sign-up and practice sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. on derby day.

The Hamster Ball Derby is open to hamsters, gerbils (where legal), mice and rats only.
