Reusable bags pushing plastic out of fashion

At the grocery store, plastic is out and reusable bags are in. But the trend hasn’t spread to department stores and malls.

Years ago, grocery shoppers would receive an annoyed look from checkers when they announced at checkout that they brought their own bags. The checkers would

be dumbfounded or

confused and not know what to do.

But now, the bags are so commonplace that cashiers are rarely thrown by the request.

Mall shopping is different. As consumers hop from store to store, they frequently collect bags

at each stop as if they were keepsakes from states on a road trip.

Yet those slick, branded bags are just as wasteful as the grocery store kind — and perhaps worse, because they are rarely reused for doggy duty or as a trash liner.

Worldwide, consumers "consume” about 500 billion plastic bags

annually, or 1 million

per minute, according

to some estimates.
