A full evening of strong performances at Friday's Gentlemen of the Road festival in Guthrie was capped off by the massive psychedelic blowout of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros at the Cottonwood Flats festival grounds,

Following a hard-edged performance by Phosphorescent, the full-dozen members of the hippie-rock collective played a tightly constructed 90-minute set, immediately ingratiating themselves with the explosive horns of “If I Were Free” from the band's self-titled 2013 album.

Throughout the set, the band punctuated its visuals with an constant stream of swirling kaleidoscopic video. It was seamless, and helped complete the illusion of late-1960s California psychedelia.

As always, the Magnetic Zeros' not-so-secret weapon is singer Jade Castrinos, who provides the crystalline songbird counterpoint to Edward Sharpe/Alex Ebert's more ragged, soul-tinged vocals and the New Orleans falsetto of Crash Richards. When Castrinos sang, even for just a verse, the crowd went nuts for her.

But the biggest response came during the Magnetic Zeros' best-known song, “Home,” which was given an extended treatment in which Ebert invited the audience to say what the song meant to them.

“I am so glad you came to this town,” said one fully enthralled audience member. “I love this town and I love all of you!”

It was a sentiment to match the tone of the set, which felt, in all the right ways, like a 25,000 member “love-in.”
