Review: 'Nothing like a Flaming Lips show'
TULSA - The Flaming Lips' spaceship lowered onto the Main Stage of Diversafest Friday, and lead singer Wayne Coyne emerged from the top of the 30-yard structure in a translucent, inflatable ball.
The Oklahoma City-bred front man started crowd surfing in the giant ball as flumes of confetti poured over the crowd, and bands of people in alien and Santa Claus outfits cheered. Dfest had officially begun. The Flaming Lips show Friday capped the first day of D-Fest, the sixth annual music festival that featured more than 100 bands, both local and national, crammed onto 13 stages in the Blue Dome district of downtown Tulsa. "This is everything you could want," said Janette Simms, 17, of Sapulpa. "All these cool bands in one place. When you get sick of one, you just walk to another stage." D-Fest is like a high-end state fair with corn dogs, booths and hip rock bands playing hipper bars surrounded by young fans wearing T-shirts with ironic slogans. Beer tents lined Tulsa's downtown streets, and upstart musical acts handed out sample CDs to concert goers, hoping to sponge off the excitement.Related Articles
