Reynolds making the grade
OU linebacker turns in a rare performance against Baylor

NORMAN — Defensive coordinator Brent Venables can’t recall ever giving one of his linebackers a perfect grade.

But that’s what happened with middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds, who graded out at 100 percent against Baylor.

"I don’t know that I’ve ever had that before,” said Venables, who has coached two Butkus Award winners and four All-Americans at linebacker. "I tried to be very nitpicky, but he graded out at 100 percent.”

That grade underscores just how well Reynolds is playing. On the season, he is leading the Sooners with 41 tackles.

Saturday, Reynolds finished with a game-high 14 tackles, including two tackles for loss.

He had the hit of the day when he popped scrambling Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin.

Three weeks ago, Reynolds delivered an equally ferocious tackle on Washington quarterback Jake Locker, momentarily knocking him out of the game. In that victory, Reynolds graded out at 95 percent.

"He plays with great technique. He’s always square. He’s always got his hips under him,” Venables said. "And he’s always able to explode to the ball-carrier when he’s in good position.”

After undergoing two knee surgeries in his career, Reynolds is finally healthy. For the first time since his freshman year, he isn’t wearing knee braces.

Reynolds, who says he feels "night and day different” from last year, has benefited from a healthy off-season, where he was able to improve his speed, strength and conditioning, as opposed to only rehabbing his knees.

Reynolds’ veteran presence has also been a big help to first-year starters Keenan Clayton and Travis Lewis, who continue to play well.

"He gets everybody squared away out there, gets everybody lined up,” coach Bob Stoops said. "Overall, he’s playing really well.”

Last year against Texas, Reynolds was criticized for his coverage against tight end Jermichael Finley, who had 149 yards receiving, though Stoops pointed out several of those coverage miscues should have been attributed to former Sooner linebacker Curtis Lofton.

Still, this Saturday will be an opportunity for Reynolds to show on a big stage that he’s a much better player.

"Ryan is a guy we didn’t know could come back from (the knee injuries). Not many people have,” Venables said. "To see him come back and play at the level he has, it’s pretty remarkable.”

Steven- Of the 4 teams you mentioned, only OU and Mizzou have played another top 25 team. You can't claim to be a realistic fan and then make such homer statements. OSU is at best a 4 loss team this year and Texas will probably have at the most 2. Defense is what separates both OU and Mizzou from everyone else. They might not be great but are good. If two teams with great offenses play each other and one has a good defense and the other has a mediocre at best defense, who wins?

Steven, I understand your anology, but could you please tell me who Texas has played to make you feel their better than OU? I believe that OU has played better teams in Cincinati and TCU than Texas who has played a banged up Colorado team as their best opponent.

Unlike james bellow,I dont think my Cowboys will beat Mizzou this weekend but,I do agree with him on the Longhorns beating Oklahoma.OU and OSU will see why an easy non conference schedule is not always the way to go...I think OU is a solid top 10 team and OSU is a solid top 25 team but,im realistic fan.You cant keep playing highschool teams in your non conference schedule and expect to be ready for really good teams in your own conference.Go Cowboys and Sooners but,I relly dont see them winning this weekend.

Whether or not the Sooners have the best big 12 linebacking corps isn't really important. What's more important is that so far the two biggest concerns on defense have played well, with the first true test for the secondary coming up on saturday. Go Sooners!!

Carson, I doubt getting blocked has any affect on the grade. That just happens, and probably has more to do with the play of the line.

He doesn't have the speed of the others but doesn't need it. I was concerned as well, but he absolutely nails em. Great job and stay healthy. Glad to see everything working out.

%100?!!! I can think of three plays in my head right now that he either was blocked on or missed the tackle. We need Lewis to play big on Sat. because he actually gets sideline to sideline.

I was very concerned about Reynolds before the season, but he has not disappointed at all! He's been stellar! You can see the way he gets Lewis and Clayton on the right page. I honestly think he is playing a role in the success that Lewis is having this year.
