PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A bill in the Rhode Island Senate would prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to anyone under age 18.

The bill was introduced this week by Democratic Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio (ruh-JEER'-ee-oh).

Electronic cigarettes look like cigarettes, but have no tobacco. They're battery-operated, heating up a cartridge containing nicotine, which is vaporized and can then be inhaled.

Ruggerio says getting kids hooked on nicotine through a so-called e-cigarette is no better than getting them started on regular cigarettes.

He says the bill is modeled on one introduced in Wyoming.
