PROVIDENCE, R.I (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'fee) is hitting the road this weekend to help with President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

Chafee is campaigning for the president's re-election in Pennsylvania on Saturday and in Virginia on Sunday.

Chafee, an independent, also spoke on Obama's behalf at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. last summer.

Chafee, a former Republican, served in the U.S. Senate with Obama. He left the GOP in 2007 and crossed party lines to back the then-senator during his 2008 White House run.

When Obama traveled to Rhode Island in 2010 while Chafee was running for governor, the president declined to endorse Democratic hopeful Frank Caprio as a courtesy to Chafee.
