RI state police to target seat belt violators
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island State Police are taking part in a national campaign to encourage safety belt use during the heavily traveled Thanksgiving holiday week.
The "Click it or Ticket" campaign is scheduled to begin Monday and will run through Nov. 26.
State police will also be targeting impaired or intoxicated drivers, aggressive drivers, speeders, those caught texting while driving and other traffic violators over the holiday.
Authorities say 161 people not wearing their seat belts died in accidents in Rhode Island from 2006 to 2010. Another 717 were seriously injured. Nationally, one in five people do not regularly wear a seat belt.
Rhode Island's participation in "Operation Click It or Ticket" is funded through the U.S. Department Transportation's Office on Highway Safety.
