Former OSU golfer Rickie Fowler paid tribute to the late Payne Stewart in the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, wearing Stewart's trademark knickers and argyle socks.

Known for his loud outfits on the golf course, Fowler told the Golf Channel "I've really been looking forward to wearing this outfit. It's been hard to keep a secret. Payne Stewart was one of my idols."

The U.S. Open is back at Pinehurst for the second time since Stewart's death in 1999. Stewart won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst that year and died months later in a plane crash.
