RIM hoping to fire up sales with new Blackberry Torch
If you love your Blackberry, you'll want a Torch. But RIM's latest offering likely will entice few other smart phone enthusiasts.
If you are married to the BlackBerry line of phones for reasons of corporate requirement, or because you like them, the company's latest model likely is what you want.

However, if you're looking to buy your first smart phone, you likely will be happier with an iPhone or Android device.
AT&T loaned me a RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 recently for a test drive, and it performed nicely. It's the first BlackBerry to feature a full touch screen along with the brand's industry-leading physical keyboard, all combined smartly with a new operating system in a slider case.
But, oh, that screen. The Torch's 3.2-inch screen displays at 480x360, which is adequate but pedestrian compared with an iPhone 4 or just about any leading Android phone currently on the market.
As touch screens become a vital interface for smart phones — and I assume that's why BlackBerry has created the Torch — the display has become a major selling point. And that's where the Torch falls short.
I can imagine someone switching from a BlackBerry to an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy phone simply because the display is so dazzling. However, it's hard to imagine someone opting to switch the other direction.
