Ben Franklin, John Adams and other Founding Fathers of our republic declared that the celebration of our independence be observed by the ringing of bells at 2 p.m. on Independence Day. Somehow that custom was lost through the years. Maybe we should all start ringing “freedom bells” at 2 p.m. July 4. Since firecrackers are banned in the cities, wouldn't ringing bells be a patriotic celebration of America?
