Ringling's Riley Daniel commits to Houston

The offer was too good for Riley Daniel to pass up.

The Ringling offensive lineman verbally committed to Houston on Sunday, choosing to go with an offer that protected him should he get injured while also relieving pressure for the upcoming season.

“I’m just going to focus on my senior year now,” Daniel said. “I went down there on that trip (a week ago) and I really liked them. I got to meet the players and I really liked them. They matched my personality, their facilities are real nice and the coaches liked me a lot. I just liked it down there.”

Daniel, who is 6-foot-6, 310 pounds and ranked No. 16 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30, also had offers from Tulsa and North Texas.

But Houston promising to honor their offer should he get hurt this season was the tipping point.

“They said they would give me my scholarship either way if I got hurt my senior year or not,” Daniel said. “Most other schools won’t do that for you. It’s kind of a safety deal.

“It can be pretty scary because if you get hurt, you’re done.”

Last week Daniel indicated he was hoping more offers would come once the season opened, saying he had been in contact with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Arkansas.

“He’s like most of us who grew up OU or OSU fans, but I don’t know it that’s coming or not,” Riley’s father Brent Daniel said. “I don’t know if anybody does.”

Riley Daniel said he saw the writing on the wall with those schools.

“Well, I really like OU but they haven’t offered me and they’ve made four offers since I’ve seen them,” he said. “I’m not really sure about them anymore. I guess they’ve got their own thing going, but I really like where I’m at so far.”
