Carmine Infantino, perhaps best-known as the co-creator of the Barry Allen “Flash” character for DC Comics has died, Comic Book Resources reports.  He was 87.

Infantino began drawing comics in the early 1940s.  Throughout that decade he drew characters including Airboy, The Heap, Johnny Thunder and the Golden Age Flash.

In 1956, Infantino designed the sleek red-and-yellow costume of the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen.  The creation and success of this character sparked the Silver Age of American Comics.   He was the artist for “Adam Strange” and for the “New Look” Batman in the mid-1960s.   During his Batman tenure, he co-created the Barbara Gordon “Batgirl.”

Infantino was art director, then publisher for DC Comics.

Later in his career, he drew a number of comics for Marvel, including “Star Wars” and “Spider-Woman.”
