Rita Silk Nauni Faces New Trial

Oklahoman Published: December 23, 1987

Prosecutors Tuesday announced Rita Silk Nauni will be retried for killing an Oklahoma City airport police officer and wounding his partner.

Nauni, 39, is accused of first-degree manslaughter and shooting with intent to kill.

A federal judge Nov. 23 reversed Nauni's 1980 convictions because prosecutors withheld evidence. Nauni used an insanity defense at the trial.

She had been serving a 150-year sentence for fatally shooting Garland Garrison and wounding Teresa Wells. The officers were shot Sept. 19, 1979, after Nauni grabbed Wells' gun during a scuffle.

Nauni, a Sioux Indian, received widespread support from Indian groups.

After last month's ruling, prosecutors negotiated with her defense attorney. But Nauni rejected an offer to plead guilty in exchange for a 45-year sentence, prosecutors said. BIOG: NAME:
