State road crews are ready for another round of snow expected late today, officials said.

Both the state Transportation Department and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority have plenty of sand and salt on hand, officials said.

14-inch snowfall total is under review
The service is reviewing the 14 inches of snowfall it previously reported to determine if the totals are accurate, Meteorologist in Charge Mike Foster said.

Snowfall totals are an average of several measurements taken in an undisturbed area free from obstruction, Foster said.

"It does take care to make sure what you’re getting is an accurate measure of just the snow itself and to get a representative amount of what it is,” Foster said.

Complicating the measurements was the presence of high wind during the snowfall. Foster said that made snow blow and drift immediately, making where the snow was measured even more important.

"The 14 inches was not a single measurement, it was the average of several measurements. And the reason we’re reviewing it is because any time there’s an event that takes place that would be a record, we review the procedures and make sure appropriate measuring techniques were used,” Foster said.

Foster said they hope to have the review done in a few days.

Crews that worked 12-hour shifts from early Thursday through Sunday were able to get some rest as sunny skies and temperatures in the low 40s Monday helped clear stubborn snow and ice from roadways.

Light snow is expected statewide this afternoon into the evening hours, ending by early Wednesday.

"We’d be probably hurting after another storm if it was this bad, but this storm’s not supposed to be as bad,” said Jack Damrill, spokesman for the Turnpike Authority.

The Turnpike Authority has enough salt and sand to take care of its 10 toll roads, Damrill said. More salt and sand were ordered Monday.

Most of the state’s turnpikes were in good shape Monday. Crews were removing leftover snow in the westbound lanes Monday on the Will Rogers Turnpike in northeastern Oklahoma. Most of the snow that fell on that turnpike occurred Friday, hours after it had caused whiteout conditions Christmas Eve in the Oklahoma City metro area.
