Travel of any kind is discouraged unless absolutely necessary. Travel is impossible across most of the state and it will take hours before emergency crews can rescue stranded motorists, state Department of Emergency Management officials warned in a news release.

In the Oklahoma City metro area, road crews are simply overmatched by the storm, said Oklahoma City streets superintendent Mike DeGiacomo.

"I've never seen anything like it... unprecedented," DeGiacomo said. "We don't have the resources."

No part of the city is safer than the other roads are bad everywhere, he said.

"Tomorrow is probably going to be a little worse than this afternoon," DeGiacomo said. "With the cold temperatures and the traffic on the roadways, that snow will get packed and it'll start to glaze over."

Temperatures will stay below freezing for several days, setting up a dangerous prolonged cold period.Strong winds should die off by morning. All precipitation should be out of the state by Friday afternoon, according to the state Department of Emergency Management.
