Rockers get turn at nominating official state song

Some Norman artists who have been nominated probably don't stand a chance of winning either. I love Mama Sweet, but "Whiskey Breath” probably won't get very far.

Neither will the two Klipspringer songs that were nominated, LaCroix said.

"I love Klipspringer, but ‘I Like Beer' will make it about as far as ‘I Keep Losing My Lighter,' which isn't very far,” he said.

Although Leon Russell, the Flaming Lips and Wanda Jackson are probably the frontrunners, at least one Norman artist stands a chance of becoming a finalist, LaCroix said.

"Hosty Duo's ‘Fraidy Hole' has a good enough chance, but I think their song ‘Oklahoma Breakdown' has a much better shot of making the final 10,” he said.

While some songs will be eliminated because they aren't written or performed by an Oklahoma artist or don't fall into the rock genre, some nominations are just plain absurd, LaCroix said.

"Color Me Badd's ‘I Wanna Sex You Up' is a pretty wild nomination,” he said. "Hinder's ‘Get Stoned' and Cross Canadian Ragweed's ‘Boys from Oklahoma' are both pretty absurd when you consider the subject matter.”
