WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama continues to expand his victory margin, after earlier amassing the 270 electoral votes needed to win re-election.

He's won the six electoral votes in Nevada, after dashing Mitt Romney's hopes in other battleground states, including Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa. That gave him 290 electoral votes to Romney's 200.

As the returns came in, staffers with the Romney campaign in Boston expressed surprise or shock that so many states were landing in Obama's column

Democrats were also able to maintain their Senate majority, with the help of victories in some high-profile races. Elizabeth Warren defeated Republican Sen. Scott Brown in Massachusetts after an expensive campaign. Democrat Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin becomes the nation's first openly gay senator.

And two Republican Senate candidates went down to defeat after controversial remarks about rape. Indiana Republican Richard Mourdock lost to Democrat Joe Donnelly, and Missouri Republican Todd Akin was defeated by Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
