Roster fight ‘nerve racking’ for Taylor Griffin

LAS VEGAS — Taylor Griffin stands and accommodates a line of autograph seekers immediately following a 95-90 win over Dallas on Monday in the NBA Summer League. Trickles of sweat drip from his brow and his soaked Phoenix Suns jersey as well wishers offer encouraging words.

It looks like Griffin has arrived.

And in a way, the former Oklahoma forward has. The Suns made him the 48th overall pick in June’s NBA Draft, giving Griffin an opportunity to fulfill his dream.

"It’s been great,” Griffin said after scoring four points and pulling down two rebounds in 21 minutes. "I felt like each step of the way I’ve gotten to the level where I wanted to be. My first goal was to go into NBA workouts and impress teams and get drafted. I did that. Now, the next step is to make a roster.”

And therein lies the catch to his story.

Phoenix has yet to sign Griffin, and the Suns have recently looked to shed salary rather than add to their books. But Griffin said his agent has relayed some positive feedback to him of the organization’s interest in his abilities.

"I feel like I’m in a really good situation to make this team,” Griffin said. "So my goal is to come out, have a good summer league and be solid. I think they’re going to do everything they can to help me develop my game.”

It’s Griffin’s continued growth that ultimately will decide his fate.

The Suns are asking Griffin, who is generously listed at 6-foot-7, to enhance his perimeter skills to transform into a small forward.
