Roughtail Brewing: 'Big things planned for 2014 and beyond'

Roughtail Brewing Co. recently shared on social media plans for its first-anniversary party, which is scheduled for April 5. I’ll share all those details, but first, I thought this would be a great time to check in with Roughtail brewmaster Tony Tielli to get a feel for how this first year has gone.

The Thirsty Beagle: Generally speaking, does it feel like time has flown by this first year of officially being in business?

Tony Tielli: Yeah, it’s a little hard to believe we’re already at the one year mark. It still feels like each day is a new adventure, so I guess that’s a good thing. I’m tremendously grateful that we are able to celebrate this milestone (and hopefully many more). Starting any new business is always a risky proposition, but the amazing support we’ve received from the craft beer drinkers in Oklahoma has made all the difference and we’re already looking to expand production to meet demand.

TTB: What would you say has been the biggest surprise of the first year?

TT: The level of cooperation, sharing, and general goodwill between the local craft brewers. Whether it’s borrowing a bag of grain, trading hops, or loaning a piece of equipment in a pinch.

TTB: Starting out as a homebrewer, how does it feel to know that not only is your beer out there for everyone to try now, but it’s in stores all around the state?

TT: Well it’s a dream come true in most regards. I love making beer that people in the community love to drink! That being said, there is also an element of anxiety over Oklahoma’s outdated alcohol laws that mandate our beer be kept warm from the second it’s leaves our building until someone buys it from the liquor store and takes it home. Craft beer is a perishable item, not unlike artisan bread or cheese, (especially the hop forward styles we brew) and when stored unrefrigerated it can deteriorate in quality and freshness very rapidly. We’ve begun date coding all of our cans so you can be sure you get the freshest possible beer, but all of us have our fingers crossed that one day we can have refrigeration for craft beer in Oklahoma.

TTB: You guys have been quick to open up for tastings and get involved in the community through the Wort Transformation and other events; do you see Roughtail continuing down that road and even expanding community involvement?

TT: Absolutely we do. This community is the reason we are in business and is our number one priority. We take great pride that 100% of our production is done here in our facility in Midwest City, by us, and it’s no coincidence that we want the craft beer drinkers that live here to feel involved. We have some big things planned for 2014 and beyond.

TTB: Any general message for the Oklahoma beer community as you guys hit the big 1-year mark?

TT: Thank you for the first great year, here’s to many more!

Thanks Tony! Now, about that anniversary party. Here’s a re-post from Roughtail’s FB page with all the details:

Roughtail Brewing Company will be celebrating our first birthday, and would like to invite you to join us in the festivities.

There is a $10 entry fee and all proceeds will go to benefit Pet Angels Rescue of Oklahoma. You will receive 4 drink tickets with the $10. 2 additional drink tickets can be purchased for $5. Each drink ticket will be good for a 6 oz. pour.

The party will take place on the brewery grounds at 1279 N. Air Depot Blvd. in Midwest City from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Live music will be provided by Woodcock Johnson and Frank’s Wurst will have food for purchase.

A general admission ticket will give drinkers an opportunity to sample eight 6 oz. pours from the following list:

-Red Republic

-Roughtail IPA

-Polar Night

-12th Round

-Polar Nitro

-Coffee Rock Tsar

-Fresh hop and tropical fruit infused Roughtail IPA

-Split Decision

-1st Anniversary Double IPA

Uber is sponsoring rides for Roughtail’s Anniversary Party! If you are new to Uber, use the promo code ROUGHTAIL to get $20 off your first ride. To sign up, download the app (available on iPhone & Android), or head to uber.com/go/ROUGHTAIL

The festivities will be on, rain or shine. Please bring your Eventbrite ticket to the event! MUST BE 21 to enter!

Sounds like this will be a great event. Tickets can be had at www.eventbrite.com, or by clicking here. And make sure you make note of the last beer on that list, 1st Anniversary Double IPA (label art above). This is the latest bottled offering from Roughtail, and if you’ll notice on the label, it includes a recipe so you can make the beer yourself. How cool! Tielli said you can expect to see the beer hit liquor stores shelves at the start of April.
