Royal rings bring big Alzheimer's auction bids
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Darrell Royal's bowl championship rings brought big-money bids as the ex-Texas Longhorns football coach's memorabilia went up for auction.
The auction Sunday came four days after Royal's death from complications of cardiovascular disease at age 88. Royal also suffered from Alzheimer's disease, and some of the proceeds from Sunday's bidding will go to the newly launched Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer's Disease.
Austin Auction Gallery spokeswoman Amy McCullough says Royal's 2006 Rose Bowl national championship ring brought a top bid of $120,000 from an unidentified bidder.
Austin businessman David Jacobson took home Royal's 1999 Cotton Bowl ring for a $14,000 bid. He says he attended that game and intends to wear the ring.
