Russell Westbrook catches fire in easy victory

by Darnell Mayberry Published: March 14, 2014

Russell Westbrook wasn’t the least bit worried about his shooting woes Sunday, the last time the Thunder faced the Los Angeles Lakers.

It happens, he said.

Oklahoma City’s four-point loss was of much bigger concern.

But on Thursday night, Westbrook atoned for his off night against his hometown team anyway.

And he also helped the Thunder set the record straight with a 131-102 victory inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Westbrook scored 29 points with nine assists, sharing game-high honors for points with Kevin Durant but needing only three quarters to light up a leaky Lakers defense. The Thunder point guard owned the first and third quarters, tallying 26 of his points in those periods before OKC’s lead eventually ballooned to as many as 31 with him on the bench for the duration of the fourth.

Westbrook made nine of 17 shots, including four of his seven 3-pointers, while adding two rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.

It was a performance that proved Sunday’s showing — a game in which Westbrook scored 20 points but made only seven of 23 shots and had eight turnovers — was an anomaly in what has otherwise been an amazing stretch.

In his last eight games, Westbrook is averaging 24.1 points on 50.7 percent shooting, to go with 4.9 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 2.7 steals.

“It’s real fun, especially when we win,” Westbrook said. “As long as we continue to win and continue to do a good job of playing together and (help) everybody get in a good groove I think we’ll be all right.”
