Russian hockey team says 'lesson learned' from 1980 'Miracle on Ice' Published: February 11, 2014

The Soviet Union's loss to an underdog Team USA at the 1980 Olympics loomed large as Russia's men's hockey squad met the press Tuesday.

Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretiak had to remind the standing-room early crowd of journalists that the United States' "Miracle on Ice" in 1980 was just a speedbump in a run of dominance for Soviet hockey.

But Tretiak also said that his players understand the pressure and responsibility that was bred from that historic loss at Lake Placid.

"In 1980, the Americans gave us a good lesson," he said. "You need to honor your opponent."
