The Oklahoman's Assistant Sports Editor Ryan Sharp answered questions from readers in today's Power Lunch Chat. Participate in our Power Lunch Chats Monday-Friday at 11 a.m. at NewsOK.com/sports. Here's the transcript from today's chat:
Your thoughts on the penalties/sanctions handed down to Penn State ... too strong, not strong enough, etc.?
I thought it was about right, honestly. Everyone asks why PSU wasn't given the 'death penalty', but you could argue this is worse. I usually don't think the NCAA acts appropriately or quickly enough, but this was not one of those cases.
Your preseason pick for Heisman trophy winner?
Matt Barkley, USC QB, would likely be an early favorite. If WVU can make it through the Big 12 with one loss, Geno Smith will be right there, too. Landry Jones is on a lot of Heisman watch lists, but I want to see what he's able to do with some unproven receivers first. We saw what happened when he lost Broyles last year.
Best high school football player in Oklahoma for the 2012 season?
DJ Ward, a defensive lineman from Lawton/Douglass. It's a little bit of a down year for high school football in Oklahoma -- not very many top-shelf (Div-I) players. Ward's at the top of the list, though.
I can't remember a top-tier HS football player transferring before his senior year, by the way. Gotta be a little depressing for Lawton fans/coaches/players/etc.
Who wins a Big 10 championship first: Indiana or Penn St.?
As much as it's hard to believe today, Penn State. Once the smoke clears, and it will eventually, Penn State is still Penn State. There are great football players that will send their great football playing children to Penn State. Great football players from Indiana (are there any?) send their kids to Ohio State or Michigan or Notre Dame.
Who wins the Big 12 for 2012?
I'm picking West Virginia, but I'm picking a two-loss West Virginia. It's just going to be too tough for OU to go win in Morgantown and I think OU has a lot of holes that need to be addressed. Don't sleep on Kansas State, too. Yep, Kansas State.
