Sam Bradford: Will he stay or will he go?
Bradford’s big decision With Heisman in hand, why would he not go to NFL?

Add another honor to Sam Bradford’s already impressive resume.

Winner of the 2008 Heisman Trophy.

There may be more in the offing for the Oklahoma quarterback. A national championship. A spot among the gridiron greats. A legend in Sooner lore.

Many an OU fan believes if that happens, Bradford will have nothing left to prove and will declare himself eligible for the NFL Draft.

Why would he stay?

Hate to break it to the Sooner Nation, but Bradford will be asking himself that question regardless of what happens the rest of this season.

All early indications point to him being a high draft pick. He might be the first quarterback drafted and might be drafted in the top 10.

This is a year with a so-so quarterback crop, and with his 6-foot-4 frame, his pocket presence and his pinpoint precision, Bradford stands out. He fits the mold. He is the prototype.

Worst-case scenario, Bradford falls to the middle of the first round.

It’s a remarkable opportunity that he’s sure to think long and hard about. He said earlier this week that he would consider information about his draft status before making a decision about his future.

In the short term, that doesn’t mean much.

"I really ... don’t think there’s a whole lot as a player that you can do,” Bradford said. "Obviously, you go out every Saturday and try to show them what you have, but as far as the other stuff, I don’t think there’s a whole lot that I can do.”

But in the next month or so, he’ll have to make a decision. Underclassmen must declare for the draft by Jan. 15.

Should he stay, or should he go?

Again, why would he stay?

Sure, there’s the whole argument for getting a college degree, and Sam Bradford strikes me as a guy who will do just that. He’s a finance major with a 3.95 grade point average. He’s talked about wanting to go to law school.

Bradford understands the importance of education.

But being a smart young man, he also understands the opportunity before him. Going high in the draft. Being in the NFL. Getting paid to play football. That window will only be open so long for Bradford.

Then, there’s the whole situation with the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement. The current contract is set to expire next year, and the NFL’s top brass is calling for a rookie wage scale in the next deal. They want to be able to spend their big bucks on proven veterans instead of untested rookies.

Matt Ryan, for example, signed a six-year deal with Atlanta worth $72 million after being the first quarterback drafted last spring.

His guaranteed money: $34.75 million.

If a rookie wage scale is implemented, rookie contracts could shrink by tens of millions of dollars.

This spring’s draft could be the final one with the massive contracts.

Money isn’t everything, of course, but it sure does make it easier to pay the bills.

Sam Bradford doesn’t need to think about any of that right now. Bask in the glow of an amazing season. Enjoy the Heisman Trophy.

"There’s no need in me getting caught up or involved in or worried about it,” he said of his future earlier this week.

Eventually, though, that time will come, and Bradford will have to decide what he’ll do. Will he stay? Will he go?

In the end, Bradford may only be left with one question.

Why would he stay?

Well aure we all want the best for Sam,I like many wOUld love to see him come back and do it all over again..He's one dang good quarterback and its ashame not to see him play for a cOUple more years for sure, the money will always be there but Sam wont always be here at OU..
Larry, Pauls Valley - Dec 17, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Sam:
Take the money and run.....and pass..........and pass.......and pass......and never look back. People that say Money isn't important, have never had any. Remember, you get only one chance in life....ask former Sooner Ryan Minor.

If I were an NFL team I'd want Sam for 10 year contract. The first two years I'd say I don't expect any playmaking from you - but I expect you to learn a whole, whole lot. Your third year I expect some results. We don't have to go to the Super Bowl, but we should make the play-offs - no matter what team he goes with. Sam should expect the team he plays for to get good, quality linemen, a very good running game to go with it, and a hard-nose defense. I think Kansas City would be a pretty good fit, or Baltimore. That's where he could do some damage. Plenty of teams out there need a QB of Sam's caliber, but they have to give him some time if they pick him. He's a big-time investment and he shouldn't be squandered. And, I'm sure he won't be...

"Money isn’t everything, of course, but it sure does make it easier to pay the bills"

Right, Jenni. So if they cap the rookie pay scale say he only gets $15 million instead of $35 million guaranteed. I think the bills will still get paid either way. Sam seems like a guy that truly enjoys the college life so it wouldn't surprise me to see him stay or it really wouldn't surprise me to see him go to the NFL. My selfishness as a fan wants to see him stay and play another year at OU, and also I have seen too many rookie QB's who are thrown into the fire and get eaten alive, and I don't wish that on anyone, especially an OU passer. Can't wait for the bowl game!!

And as a 3.95 GPA Finance major, Sam knows enough finance to figure out the NPV of a 6 year $75 million deal with a $35 million signing bonus versus a 5 year $30 million deal with a $12 million signing bonus. No contest: he's gone. But, Sam, win that Jan 8 game before you go and cement yourself forever in Sooner lore as, dare I say it, the greatest Sooner of all time.
CECIL, Encinitas - Dec 15, 2008 at 10:55 am
But Sam should let the Lions know that he'll hold out if they draft him. That's the one franchise that he should refuse to play for. They're a mess. KC, Seattle, St. Louis are fine, but Detroit is hopeless and will wreck Sam for sure (ask Billy Sims or Steve Owens).
CECIL, Encinitas - Dec 15, 2008 at 10:49 am
Go, Sam, go! I'd love you to stay, but tens of millions of dollars is too much to ignore. I'm a big believer in education, but the prospect of a $35 million signing bonus becoming a $12 million signing bonus and the loss of $20 million or more is simply too much money.
CECIL, Encinitas - Dec 15, 2008 at 10:46 am
Amen, Mark. We don't need any distractions between now and Jan. 8.
Lindsay, Santa Monica - Dec 15, 2008 at 12:24 am
How bout you fans that are asking Sam to stay, think about what you would do! Stay and lose millions, or go and make millions? Huuuummmmmmm, that is a no brainer, gotta go Sam. The cap that they are talking about will cost you too much money to stay. Remember Rhett Bomar? He got hit hard alot!! Don't take the risk. GO MAN GO!! BOOMER SOONER!!
Brian, Okemah - Dec 14, 2008 at 10:03 pm
how about we not worry about this any more, and just concentrate on rooting for the sooners. how about the media in oklahoma, why don't you stop writing stories about this until after jan.8. sooners don't need any unwanted distractions.

g of shawnee, what do you mean that anyone who wants sam to come back is not interested in what is best for him? Why do you want him to go pro so badly, do you think he will share some of his moolah with you because you obviously have his best interest in mind? I agree with some of the other posts today that now the awards have been handed out it is time to get back to the national championship game. If that is won then this season is a huge success for the team, obviously. On ESPN the big 12 beat writer quoted sam as saying such; as did tebow. TIme to get the game face back on and crank out another "w".
Richard, Visalia - Dec 14, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Anyone who says that Sam should come back is not interested in what is best for Sam. Trade places with him and lets see you turn down an extra 20-30 MILLION bucks. With major players leaving the O Line Sam would be at risk. Sure he can buy a million dollar injury policy but again trade places. Would you give up a sure thing in order to stay in little league? Go Sam, enjoy the blessings of lifetime financial security, be smart, be generous, stay real.

I bet next year Stoops will wish that instead of running up the score, he would of put some underclass linemen in to get a little playing experience.
Michael, Oklahoma City - Dec 14, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Go Sam! Go high! Your linemen are leaving. Hulio Iglasius is leaving and the rest.

We will miss you, but for your own good, Go and don't look back! Great job this year and last year. I have all the confidence in the world that Josh will teach our next QBs for years to come.

Steve, I don't think the team reads the BS we write on a forum. I don't think our ramblings will influence the teams preparation for their bowl game.... If your pants are down, you need to get a belt to hold them up. Or have you been in jail?
UnSub, Yukon - Dec 14, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Why wouldn't he go? The world revolves around money. You go to college to learn to make money. Bradford is well educated in that aspect. The records he set this season will stand for many years. He's done all he can do at OU, no matter how much we want him to stay. He can't out due what he did this season. The timing is perfect for him to go..... Josh Heuple coached Jason White to a Heisman and coached Bradford to a Heisman. When Bradford leaves, Heuple with start on the next qb for the Heisman...... Bob Stoops tells his players if they are ready for the NFL. I wonder what he will tell Bradford?
UnSub, Yukon - Dec 14, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I enjoy these stories but the main thing is to not forget the main thing. We got a game coming up after the New Year. Let's focus on the main thing first. Then, who is going out for the draft and who is going to coach where can be addressed. If we keep on pondering all the wrong things, we'll be caught with our pants down as happened with USC at the Orange Bowl and a couple other bowl games recently. Post season with the pants down seems to be de rigeur lately at OU. We need to dial it back more than a few years and show up ready to play.
Steve, Oklahoma City - Dec 14, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Some of you that wear the crimson shaded glasses did not pay attention to the story. While it is true that the NFL will always be there and Sam is indeed very smart, the rookie salary cap would likely cost him tens of millions of dollars if he waits a year - even if he has another Heisman and BCS year, which with the O-line losses he likely would not have.

I hope Sammy does what is best for him. He has given us just about everything a college player could be asked for and produced CFB records/awards by the truckload. I would love to see him stay but
I also hope he gets to reap the rewards of what he has done for our program. Thanks heaven he is a classy, grounded young man with lots of guidance. May God continue to bless you Sam!
LeAnne, Miami - Dec 14, 2008 at 11:17 am
Jenni, why would Sam stay? Because the NFL will always be there. Sam will not get any worst as a qb if he stays at OU. He could get injured, but that chance happens everytime we all get into a car to go somewhere (granted we dont have 300 lb men trying to tackle us- but when its your time, its your time). Why would he stay? Once he leaves OU he can never come back, that chapter of his life is completed. I hope he seeks the advice of Ryan for Atlanta about the "business". While Sam is a very mature young man, at least as far as I can tell via interviews, I can imagine the NFL environment eats up 21 year-olds. I dont know, maybe since I was a little kid OU football has been special to me. I would milk this opportunity as long as I could. College football is so exciting because of the passion and tradition. I dont even watch the NFL much because it is a business and the players play like it.
Richard, Visalia - Dec 14, 2008 at 10:30 am
Why would he not go? He loses 4 of the 5 starting offensive linemen and most of his wide receivers and possibly Gresham as well. He will be breaking in a young offensive line and a group of new young receivers. I would love it if he stayed but it's hard to see that happening.

There are a million reasons to go, and many less to stay. But I agree with Patrick. This has been a dream for him to play at OU. In these days of sports being ALL about the money, it would be nice to see him stay another year and would enhance his image as a young man who has his head on straight.

I understand about the money, but look at the article about the NBA's rookie salary cap. It's not like Sam will starve IF it goes into effect (those numbers are ridiculous). Also, the union may very well be able to impose its will on the owners - I suspect we're not very likely to see a rookie cap.

As for injury, that's always a possibility. It's also a possibility in the NCS game. And it's a possibility next year. It's also possible any of us will step out in front of a bus tomorrow.

I understand why he would go, but best case scenario, he stays, remains healthy, and goes on to a better NFL career due to being more mature and having another year with Heupel. And yes, I know I'm selfish.
Debbie, Oklahoma City - Dec 14, 2008 at 8:55 am
I hope Sam takes the money and goes Pro. Of course, I am a Husker Fan :) GBR!
Chris, Oklahoma City - Dec 14, 2008 at 8:55 am
Sam appears to me as one not too concerned about the quick buck. He loves college football, he loves OU, and is smart enough to realize that his education is a great backup if an injury terminates his football career. OU got him to where he is and perhaps a sense of duty and loyalty will make his final decision. All Sam has to do is look at previous underclassmen who left early and their fate after football.
Robert, Oklahoma City - Dec 14, 2008 at 8:52 am
I definitely think that Bradford should go but there are a couple of reasons to stay...He just turned 21 and his body with continue to develop. He is a huge OU guy...one more year with coach Heuple. He will have a chance to go down as the greatest QB in OU history...shattering ALL the records. He could also go down as the greatest qb in college football history...possible back to back heismans....back to back National Championships. Like i said i think that he should go but there are some things to stay for

I for one am hoping that Sam Bradford will come back next year for at least one more shot at Colt McCoy and Texas, especially if the Sooners can't bag the N.C. this year against Florida. Sooner football, Sooner men's & women's basketball teams all doing great this year! And remember.......There Is Only One...OKLAHOMA!
Jimmy, Garden City - Dec 14, 2008 at 7:22 am
Best case scenario: He falls to the middle of the first round. If I were him, potentially being drafted by the Lions would be the best argument for staying in school. He might make less money, but he would play for a better team if he went in the middle of the first round. Worst case scenario: He has a career ending injury in college next year, with an inexperienced offensive line protecting him.

For selfish reasons, I'd love to see him stay, but I think if I were his parent, I'd tell him to go if he's projected as going anywhere but to Detroit.

I don't see Bradford as a money guy. However, from a business standpoint I would find it difficult to believe he won't strongly consider going pro. OU will be rebuilding next year and will probably be back in the hunt soon. If OU wins the NC, I would think he'll go pro, what better way to end your college career... Go out on top and as stated before, having a good NFL quarter back will only enhance OU's image.

He doesn't seem concerned about money. Looks like his family is in good shape. Why not stay, enjoy another year of college ball, and continue to develop. The NFL and the money aren't going anywhere. If he were to stay, he'd be forced to do more as many of his protectors and weapons will be gone(although our cupboard will hardly be bare), which will also help him get better. As far as Mark Sanchez coming out next year, it wouldn't matter, there's no way they'd take Sanchez over Bradford, this year, next year, ever.
Patrick, Fayetteville - Dec 14, 2008 at 12:28 am
I know as Sooner fans we want him to come back, but as Sam Bradford fans, we want what's best for him and his family. That might be something besides quarterbacking OU next year. And if so, as far as I'm concerned, it's thanks, nice job, and best of luck to you.

Think for a minute about the long term benefits of Sam going pro now... Mitch Mustain transferred from Arkansas and went to USC because of the reputation it has for not only putting out Heisman winning QB's, but also NFL QB's. Mark Sanchez is already being handicapped as the favorite for next year's Heisman - and Mel Kiper said this week he'll be the first player taken in the 2010 NFL draft. As much as Jason White is admired in this state, there aren't a lot of blue chip high school QB's out there right now that look at Jason and think, "Man, what happened with that guy makes me want to go to OU and develop as a QB!" Sam leaving now - particularly if Stafford leaves Georgia and gets drafted by Detroit allowing Sam to perhaps land in a better situation like St. Louis or Kansas City - could bring an entirely new recruiting tool to OU that it has never possessed in it's illustrious history. No OU coach on a visit with a recruit has ever been able to point to a graduate of the University of Oklahoma playing QB on Sundays and say, "Son, you come to OU and that could be you too." Pete Carroll gets to do that all the time. Sure, Sam going pro now slows things down next year and maybe OU loses two it would win with him (although give Landry Jones the reigns next season and OU is right back in the thick of it two seasons from now!) - but the recruiting benefits Sam leaving could give OU might ultimately produce far more wins over the next five or six seasons than Sam would by coming back next season and watching his draft stock plummet when his stats go down behind a brand new o-line.
Scott, Tulsa - Dec 13, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Why would Sam stay? To win a National Championship in 2009, and in early 2010, and before that another Heisman, and before that another Big XII Championship. Those are reasons to stay. Playing college football only come once in a lifetime.
