Same-sex marriage ruling puts spotlight on federal judges

With his ruling striking down Oklahoma’s constitutional ban on gay marriage, U.S. Senior District Judge Terence Kern brought nationwide attention to the hushed marble halls of Tulsa’s federal court.

The ruling sparked statewide debate over the role of federal judges in such matters, with Gov. Mary Fallin saying: “The will of the people has once again been ignored by the federal government.”

Others cheered the ruling as a courageous stand by a jurist in the reddest state in the nation.
