EDMOND — Sara Sara Cupcakes is coming to Edmond after the city council's approval of the commercial site plan for the business.
The cupcake bakery is expected to open in a renovated house at 17 E Fifth St.
This is the second location in Edmond where owners of the cupcake business have tried to get approval.
Council members a year ago denied a request for the cupcake bakery at 235 W Hurd. Nearby property owners opposed the move because of the possibility of increased traffic.
The new location is a 1,400-square-foot house in the Central Business District area.
The unanimous vote came with opposition from businessman Mark Neighbors, who owns the majority of the nearby property along Fifth Street.
Neighbors said he was concerned because the bakery property was not large enough to include streetscape requirements of lighting, parking and landscaping.
"I think the streetscape is a vital part," Neighbors said. "It adds to the area."
The size of the property limited the parking design and eliminated the use of a commercial trash bin. Owners were able to meet the city's parking requirements and will use multiple rollout residential trash containers.
Sara Sara Cupcakes got its start in Oklahoma City in November 2008 in a renovated house at 7 NW 9, with 18 varieties of cupcakes.
Tia Turner, with Sara Sara Cupcakes, said the business started after the death of a family member named Sara.
"It has turned into a successful cupcake business," Turner said. "We use very few paper products. We don't generally have a lot of trash."
Business owners said they plan to hire local students to work at the business.
