Sarkeys Foundation awards nearly $1 million in grants to Oklahoma nonprofits

The amount of the grants awarded in 2012 totaled $994,867, according to a news release. Since its founding in 1962, Sarkeys has awarded more than $75 million in grants for education, social services, arts and culture, health care and medical research and environmental projects.

“We know the need continues to grow and we are pleased to be able to help with social and human services needs in communities across our state,” Executive Director Kim Henry said in the news release. “Our focus in 2013 will continue to be supporting organizations' programs and services benefiting the most vulnerable Oklahomans.”

Nonprofit agencies have the option of completing one of two grant applications for amounts of $10,000 and less or more than $10,000.

The 2012 grants awarded, listed with how the agencies spent the money, are:

• The Grace Center of Southern Oklahoma, Ardmore: shower, washer and dryer for the Day Center, $10,000.

• American Red Cross, Tulsa: disaster response in southeast Oklahoma, $10,000.

• Bethesda Inc. of Norman: computers, hard drives, monitors, printers, server and backup drive with software to run and transfer data, $25,000.

• Calm Waters Center for Children and Families, Oklahoma City: grief support groups, $25,000.

• CASA of Oklahoma County: support to recruit community volunteers to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children, $35,000.

• Center of Family Love, Okarche: dining room renovation, $50,000.

• Child Abuse Network, Tulsa: specialized program equipment, $18,043.

• Christmas Connection, Oklahoma City: School Connections' school uniform program, $6,500.

• Community Literacy Centers, Oklahoma City: three new classes and partial salary for a coordinator for the LEAP (Learning, Enriching, Achieving, Preparing) program, $24,183.

• Community Service Council of Greater Tulsa, Tulsa: Updating 2-1-1 information in Eastern Oklahoma communities, $30,000.

• Council for Developmental Disabilities, Norman: insulation and ceiling tiles, $10,000.

• East Central University Foundation, Ada: Rudolph Moot Courtroom, $50,000.

• Family Promise of Shawnee, Shawnee: furnishings for family day center and rollaway beds, $17,956.
