Cold Wash. Use the cold water setting at all times and select an appropriate coldwater detergent for best results. (If your stuff is really dirty, set aside heavily soiled items for a separate hot load).
Avoid ironing. After you line-dry, fold dry clothes where you want creases and put them in the bottom of the stack to use the weight of other clothes to give them that just pressed look sans electricity.
Front load. When the time comes to buy a new washer, choose a front loading machine that can use at least 40% less water and 65% less electricity than the traditional top loaders.
Concentrate. When shopping for detergent, choose the power (ultra-concentrated) kind. That way you aren’t paying for someone to ship the added water weight in your soap across the globe.
Fill-er Up! Always fill the machine to the top to maximize the water and energy used. If you must do a half-load, make sure you choose the appropriate setting if you have that option.
