Holly Hunter calls the Oklahoma City Police Department quite regularly these days. She wants to get the facts right for her series "Saving Grace,” which begins its third season at 9 tonight on TNT. She plays Oklahoma City police detective Grace Hanadarko on the show, for which she also is an executive producer. And she appreciates police Sgts. Paco Balderrama and Brian Picklo, police detective Cris Cunningham and police Master Sgt. Gary Knight for their assistance. "They’re used to me calling, and I don’t even have to introduce myself,” Hunter said in a recent phone interview with The Oklahoman. "It’s like, ‘Hey Paco, you got two seconds? What do you think about this?’ "Or I’ll call Brian and say, ‘What would you say here, or did this ever happen to you?’ The conversation sometimes lasts 30 seconds, and sometimes it will last a lot longer. "I feel blessed to have those guys. The whole department has been extremely generous for years.” Last year, Hunter won a Gracie Allen Award for her realistic portrayal of the detective with a troubled past and a last-chance angel named Earl. So did Oklahoma City native Nancy Miller, creator and executive producer for "Saving Grace.” This season will present new challenges for the cast and writing staff. And Hunter is excited about what the future holds for Grace — the longest part she’s had in her career that includes an Oscar, two Emmys and a Golden Globe. "The third season is developing even as we shoot it, which is another really exciting thing about the show,” Hunter said. "There are large themes that we want to discuss and approach, but I would say there is no definitive road map. "There is a greater devotion to asking bigger questions this season. Grace is asking questions about faith and about belief. There’s no judgment that the show makes on any kind of belief system in the world. We open up the conversation to be nondenominational and very international.” Although work keeps her busy, Hunter does make time to watch other TNT shows, such as "The Closer” starring Kyra Sedgwick and "Leverage” featuring University of Oklahoma alumnus Christian Kane. "TNT has done a spectacular job of nurturing and developing other shows,” she said. "They’ve got great taste. And I’m really looking forward to seeing ‘HawthoRNe,’ which is the new Jada Pinkett Smith show. It sounds fantastic.”
