GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Schalke has sealed a deal for Germany international Sidney Sam from Bundesliga rival Bayer Leverkusen for next season.

Sam, an attacking midfielder who usually plays on the wing, agreed to a four-year deal effective on July 1, Schalke announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old has seven goals and five assists for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this season. In all, he has 23 goals in 83 league games since switching from Hamburger SV in 2010. He previously spent two seasons on loan at Kaiserslautern.

"Sam hasn't just shown this season what he can deliver in attack with his strong performances," Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said. "He can play in many positions, is very driven, and wants to achieve a lot with Schalke. We're delighted that he's decided for the 'Royal Blues.'"

Sam made his debut for Germany in a friendly against Ecuador in May, going on to make five appearances for the national side.

German daily Bild reported he had a buy-out clause of 2.5 million euros ($3.4 million), effective after the World Cup.
