PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than 40 flights have been canceled at T.F. Green Airport as a winter storm bringing snow and high wind has hit Rhode Island.

By midday Thursday, 3.5 inches of snow had fallen in Foster, while two inches was reported in Bristol and Narragansett. The snow had turned to rain in several areas by 1 p.m.

The National Weather Service had said 8 to 10 inches of snow and one-tenth of an inch of ice could ultimately fall in northwestern Rhode Island, with 4 to 8 inches in the Providence and Westerly areas and 2 to 5 inches of snow around Newport.

Schools were closed across the state, including in Providence, Cranston, Warwick and Newport.

Several communities have issued parking bans.
