CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Southeast Missouri State has hired Toledo defensive coordinator Tom Matukewicz (mah-TOO'-kuh-wihts) as its new head coach.

The university introduced Matukewicz during a news conference Wednesday. He replaces Tony Samuel, who had two years left on a five-year contract when he was let go Nov. 26 after coaching the Redhawks to a 31-60 record in eight seasons.

Matukewicz has been defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for two seasons at Toledo of the Mid-American Conference. Under his guidance, Toledo improved to ninth in overall defense from 12th in 2012.

The 40-year-old native of Silver Lake, Kan., was linebackers coach at Northern Illinois before joining Toledo in 2012. He has also coached at Southern Illinois, Pittsburg State and Emporia State.

His four-contract at Southeast Missouri provides a base salary of $130,000 with additional compensation up to $57,000 per year.
