— The family of a pet kangaroo that went missing on Thanksgiving is organizing a ground search for the animal and seeking volunteers.

Shayla Menhusen, the pet's owner, said the search will be Friday at Meeker Lake north of Shawnee. The search will be on the southeast side of the lake, 7 miles north of Interstate 40 on Kickapoo Road, and is tentatively scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

Menhusen said she's looking for as many as 100 volunteers. About 40 people will hike through the grass while the rest would stand and keep watch in case the animal is flushed out of the brush. Workers from G.W. Exotic Animal Park near Wynnewood in Garvin County have offered to help in the search.

“There are some wooded areas but for the most part she likes the grassy areas,” Menhusen said. “I'm praying she's out there.”

Menhusen said tracks have been found in the area along with video evidence the kangaroo has been there.

Menhusen recommends volunteers bring walkie-talkies with earpieces if they have them.
