SeaWorld turns 50 amid pressure to end killer-whale shows Published: March 31, 2014

SeaWorld is continuing to face public pressure to end the captivity of its killer whales at the marine-animal-themed parks, according to USA TODAY.

Calls for change — including a bill in California — have been mounting months after the release of a documentary called "Blackfish." The 2013 film documents the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010 by Tilikum, a 12,000-pound killer whale previously linked to two other deaths.

Blackfish raises the question of whether these highly intelligent and social animals should be in captivity. The film asserts orcas in captivity die young and act out aggressively toward each other and toward humans, USA TODAY reports.
