Second Amendment rights with common sense protections

Published: July 29, 2012

After multiple shooting tragedies and numerous innocent deaths, can we not demand some common sense? Can we not support and have Second Amendment rights with realistic, common-sense protections? I'm a gun owner, absolutely believing in the individual right of self-defense, defending your property and family, with no duty to retreat. However, I can reasonably grasp that I can have all of the above without oversized magazines, without possessing thousands of rounds of ammunition, without needing to possess military assault-style weapons and without acquiring tactical assault-style gear. These oversized magazines were involved in the Arizona and Colorado shootings, resulting in the killing of innocent individuals. Make no mistake; these magazines are not part of home protection and self-defense. These magazines are for killing people, as quickly and efficiently as possible. You don't need 30-plus-round magazines to hunt any game other than people.

Let's pass legislation that could help prevent the next senseless tragedy. We can have Second Amendment rights, protect our families and go to movies and congressional town hall meetings without being mowed down in a hail of bullets. All we have to do is demand common-sense legislation.
