Second-guessing Romney and the '47 percent'

Douglas Burr (Your Views, Oct. 7) discusses the “47 percent” video in which Mitt Romney sounds as if he’s dismissing and has no concern for a large portion of the American electorate. Burr claims to know that “no one present understood” Romney to mean that and that Romney “knew they understood what he meant.” According to Burr, Romney was saying he wasn’t targeting that 47 percent in his campaigning.

How exactly does Burr know what Romney and everyone in the room understood? That’s quite a feat! It’s especially stunning since Romney explained that his statement was “completely wrong.” Was that the statement we all heard or the one Burr knew?
