Fall down before the goal line.
"I won't tell you that didn't cross my mind,” Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator said.
That's what Texas Tech's offense will do to you. Mike Leach's Red Raiders will stagger you and choke you and disorient you. Tech almost always will make you lose your mind.
But not always the ballgame. Not Saturday. Pettigrew scored too soon, no doubt about it, but OSU beat Texas Tech 49-45 anyway as the beleaguered Cowboys took advantage of a chance for redemption.
Thus a season was saved, at least temporarily. The Cowboys, 41-23 losers at little Troy a week ago, cast new light on their 2007 hopes. The Big 12 this side of the Sooners seems vulnerable; 2-2 OSU can't be written off. Not by a longshot.
Not after 60 minutes of offense like this. Not after 30 minutes of defense like this.
Quarterback Zac Robinson, whose starting debut was a dud at Troy, directed an offense that matched Tech point for point and almost yard for yard. Robinson did what Bobby Reid failed to do as the Cowboy quarterback; tuck the ball and run. Robinson joined twin tailbacks Dantrell Savage and Kendall Hunter as triple-digit rushers; Robinson is just the second OSU quarterback in 30 years to run for at least 100 yards.
And OSU's defense, with a history, both ancient and recent, of massive leaks, came up with six stops in Tech's eight second-half possessions, a remarkable stand by a unit that was powerless to stop Troy.
On a day when OSU gave up the most yards in school history (718) and Tech quarterback Graham Harrell had the fourth-highest passing total in NCAA history (646), the only thing that really mattered was Ricky Price tipping Harrell's fourth-down pass in the final 20 seconds. The ball glanced off Tech flanker Michael Crabtree's shoulder pad, and the Cowboys had an amazing victory.
"They don't give W's and L's for the amount of yards you give up,” said State linebacker Donovan Woods.
Points are what matters, and OSU scored last, on Pettigrew's nifty, 54-yard catch-and-run, in which the 260-pound tight end lumbered away from the Tech defenders to score with 1:37 left.
Ninety-seven seconds is an eternity in Tech's offense.
Robinson looked at the clock as he ran off the field in celebration. "I said, ‘You know, there's a lot of time left on the clock,'” said OSU's new quarterback.
Same thought struck defensive end Nathan Peterson.
"He scored a little quicker than I would have liked,” said Peterson, who had been rejoicing at Pettigrew's touchdown. "I thought, ‘Oh man, a minute and a half left.' I quickly got serious.”
Tech, of course, took about 15 seconds to go 55 yards and reach the OSU 17-yard line. But then Tim Beckman's defense stiffened, with Patrick Lavine and Jacob Lacey and Marcus Brown and finally Price making plays to stop Harrell's assault.
Beckman's administration needed this. The first 3
games seemed to exonerate the deposed Vance Bedford, Mike Gundy's defensive coordinator the previous two years. But holding Tech to 10 second-half points is a building block. A big building block.
"It's important for us to finish the ballgame,” said Peterson, a senior who has been on the wrong end of so many OSU defensive meltdowns. "This is absolutely something we can build from.”
Turns out Pettigrew played it right. Scoring so early did more than give Tech a chance to win. It gave OSU's defense a chance to shine.

Those who can, do; Those who can't, write--,or go to TV sports--, etc. I'm proud of Mike's response to a slimy hit piece. If Ms. Carlson has an ounce of character, she will have an apology in her Monday column.
It's a good article Berry in that the Cowboys were able to hold off Tech at the end. But a defense that gives up 748 (or was it 758) yards, is NOT impressive. Frankly, I don't know if there is a defense worth a twit in the Big 12 other than OU, and they had at least 3 or 4 busted assignments against Tulsa.
And why have these dingbat fans got on such a rage? Actually, I thought Carlson's article yesterday was right on the money. And the Cowboy offence against Tech only validated it.
The good news for OSU is they will play a lot of other stinky defenses in the Big 12. What it means is they will have to outscore the other teams like they did yesterday. The kudos goes to their offense, not defense. And to further Carlson's point, I don't think the Cowboys would have won with Bobby Reid at QB yesterday. And they will have to continue to outscore teams in the future because their defense will not improve that much over the course of the year.
Berry, Good article--don't let these idiots from either school change the way you write. Though it is and has always been true that the Oklahoman is Sooner biased, I see factual info, merged with a wealth of talent, coming from your keyboard--usually fair and
unbiased. As for Carlson, I don't see a bias, maybe just a bit of immaturity and a need to have "been there" which is a problem with many sports writers, and (no chauvinism intended--just fact) particularly those of the female variety. I'm sorry girls (and guys who haven't done it) there is just no way to know exactly what it's like to practice, play, etc a sport unless you've actually done it. That's not to say the sport can't be understood or that observations from those who haven't participated are irrelavant--not at all, because fans are a main ingredient for a sport's success. However, truth be known, most guys (and gals) who play sports would do it even if there weren't a single fan in the stands. Put it this way--how many generals come from outside the army? None. And how many coaches have never played? Very few.
Jenni Carlson was an attempt to bring a female reporter into the fold a few years ago. She's horrible. The Oklahoman keeps her because of her gender. That's embarrassing.
in a national review of the Daily Oklahoman..."Critics say that its monopoly over local news "has bred both a management and newsroom culture that ridicules critics and rewards mediocrity"
You know, one week ago I wrote on here that I wanted to see more fire from Mike Gundy. Well, today we have it. I'm so sick of you whiners that say Mike had a tirade or was acting like a child. You must live with blinders on because the world isn't a nice place. This coach is like a father to these players and he was doing what fathers do...defending his kids. Ms. Carlson's article was a joke and the DOK is a disgrace to daily newspapers. Nationally, the DOK is known as one of the worst. I hope the paper on Monday reads "DOK fires sports staff, Currently seeking bottom-of-the-barrel applicants".
BTW/ My post today at 9:30a.m. was not intended to affirm or criticize Coach Gundy's behavior. I have no comment on Coach Gundy's response other than noting his passion about Bobby Reid, the news column in question and his making strong denials about the content within.
I have now heard Gundy's remarks in regard to Jenni's article. His passion is noted. I agree that we should be more kind to players...it does hurt to suffer disappointment and not live up to one's expectations and goals and dreams. ______________I don't wish that for anyone. It is troubling to learn that Carlson actually quoted coaches or implied such ...when, in fact, the information she attributed to coaches has now been identified by Gundy as untrue. __________________ I realize that hers is an opinion column, but I did believe when I read it that she was furnishing accurate insight into Reid's situation. I admit that what she expressed had crossed my own mind, but I wasn't zeroing in on her making fun of Reid...shame on me. I can't and don't condone that! ___________________________ I feel sure that Donovan Woods suffered hurt, too, when coaches made the decision not to use him at QB...I would have been dismayed had the press put him down by printing lies. I feel the same way upon learning that happened to Reid. We must stop and realize that a sports column is just opinion, after all. Though there seemed to be strong implication that Carlson relied on some inside fact about the coaching decision. __________________________It's a shame this escalated into an ugly and hurtful situation. It's understandable that Gundy would not appreciate folks presenting erroneous information in regard to one of his players. Apparently, Reid's behavior as a team member is something we should applaud, as well as his character. ______________________Who knows why the team hasn't performed well under Reid's leadership? I feel that I was also being too hard on him. I wish him well. _______________________ I hope that all this negativity and publicity does nothing to cast a shadow on the great effort and leadership Zac Robinson has shown, thus far. I wish him well. I wish the entire team well.____________________ We must also remember sports are blown way out of proportion and when all is said and done..to fans...it won't matter 5 or 10 years down the road. However, to these who have invested their hopes, dreams and lives for a future in pro ball..for their a livelihood...it may be way too much pressure and that dream may make players focus foggy...you can try too hard sometimes. I thought Reid was unable to lead the team. I can't know that.______________________ I don't believe Zac Robinson aspires to play pro ball...so maybe it is easier to relax and just play ball...whatever it is, it seems to be working. Besides, he is first class. (not saying Reid is not..not talking about Reid when I compliment Zac) Let's hope Zac's success continues and the team's success continues.......any athlete, any team can have a down day...a bad game. After all is said and done, we need to try to remember that building and sustaining good character is more important than winning a game....any and every day!
Redemption. Finally. Oklahoma State beat Tech to win their conference opener. Jenni wrote a demeaning article about a player and pointed a finger at the coaching staff, which caused the O-State faithful to go ballistic, fired-up Coach Gundy and caused him to unleash a public whipping. This is just the kind of stuff that can galvanize the team. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys won the rest of their games and go 10-2 or 9-3. Go Pokes!
Why was it necessary to mention OU in an article about the OSU game? Did OSU get mentioned in the article about OU's win over Tulsa? Leave OU out of this unless there s a reason to put it in. You start by talking about OSU's win and then you have to go and ruin it by talking about OU... WHY???
The Cowboys played great yesterday and Zack Robinson has given OSU fans alot to look forward to the next couple of years. On defense, Nathan Peterson played a hell of a game. Unfortunately, no one else on defense showed up. Ted Beckman should put on a mask on payday when he picks up his paycheck, because he's steeling the dough. If defensive mistakes are correctable, why can't he teach his guys to play pass defense? Yesterdays defensive effort was laughable. I wish Boone Pickins would BUY us a talented Defensive Coordinator.
I think OSU played a great game yesterday. They hung in there and made the right plays when they needed to. Robinson proved that he should have the QB job. I believe the fans should be very proud of their team. But I think they should be embarrassed by the rantings of their coach. Instead of reveling that his team had played well and won the game, he screamed at a sports writer. He's a professional, he should act like one. Be a better example to your team, Coach.
I just watched the clip of Coach Gundy, and I couldn't help but think what a total lack of professionalism. That was a conversation best to have in private, not in public, and certainly not with the tone of voice he used. Furthermore, to wish that she some day has a kid that get's bullied so she will know what it feels like shows a total lack of class. Some of Gundy'ss finals words, "who's the kid here?" From watching the video, I would say you Mr. Gundy. Good luck to OSU on the rest of it's season.
Ah,yes...watch for it, folks because it's always there....the Daily OUklahoman, ubiquitious "OU Superiority Reference":
"The Big 12 this side of the Sooners seems vulnerable; 2-2 OSU can't be written off. Not by a longshot."
Once again, and I will continue to point this out with EVERY OSU article written by this suck staff of OU toadies, an OSU article CANNOT be written without the mention of OU.
The Daily OUklahoman is a stinking OU PROPAGANDA maching and nothing more. Tramel, Carlson, Rohde and Baldwin all kowtow to the OU SID.
That's why this paper will continue to be known nationally as one of the worst.
Could we just get an article about the Cowboys without OU in it, you hacks!!
Brian, Okemah...you seem quite lacking when it comes to good sportsmanship! This has nothing to do with OU..but it is obvious that you seek to make it so when you voice sour grapes when OSU wins a good game. You just felt you had to get some words in there to let everyone know that OU is the best. It is inappropriate to do that, Brian. OU had no part in yesterday's ballgame. Friday night, Tulsa was theirs...no one tried to make that an OSU thing. This had nothing to do with OU..period! Well, I didn't buy your ..."I used to root for OSU" claim..so phony! If you don't realize what you just did, let me explain. You sound like a big bully..who is mad because a team he didn't like it that OSU won that game. Talk about being a cry baby......well, you actually sound as if you feel threatened and you have to put the winner of the OSU/Texas Tech game down! Be satisfied with the great season OU is having and stop your pretense of ever having given support to OSU. There is no reason for you to get bent out of shape about anything going on in Stillwater.....this was not the Bedlam game. You made it perfectly clear.....you don't like OSU and you can't take the victory so you are trying to throw some trash on that success. OSU plays with heart, by the way! You can deny it, but it is true and ..after all is said and done, if the team has "jelled" and it comes together now..and they add that element of "heart" that they are famous for....it scares you. Now...again, OSU's season has nothing to do with OU until the Bedlam game. Why talk trash now? Don't answer that...I know. You lack good sportsmanship.
Wow! You OSU fans really are down on the media and OU fans aren't you! Well too stinkin bad, get over it!! I'm an OU fan and I used to root for OSU too unless they were playing each other, but not now, no way, no how. I hope OSU gets beat every game. You know why! Because that's the way OSU fans about OU. Don't blame the media and OU fans because you root for a team that has no guts 99% of the time. You don't like the way these articals read because they tell the truth about how gutless and crapy OSU plays football. If your an OSU fan you should be used to that by now! Shouldn't you? So boo hoo all you want, and enjoy this win, because if I'm right, There's a 99% chance you won't get another one.
Frankly...it concerns me that Gundy can't see what may well be the element of real truth in what Carlson had to say. That's not a good sign......without a doubt, Reid is talented, but something has been wrong with his ability to get the job done. Blinders aren't going to help the team...it seemed to me that Jenni Carlson felt the coaching staff had finally seen what some others have seen. Though I don't want to trash Reid and realize that she didn't have to hit him so hard, I appreciated her willingness to speak up and say what has been on my mind. Maybe there was so much hype about Reid, it was unrealistic to expect better of him, but I admit his contributions to the team have been disappointing to me. When they dumped Donvovan in favor of Reid, I admit I expected a big time quarterback. I doubt his ability to lead the team, no matter how talented he may be. Yet, I do not wish to trash him either. That doesn't mean I want him to QB the team. I thought Carlson was telling us that the coaching staff had removed the blinders and could see that talent alone doesn't carry the ball/team far enough sometimes. After the great game in Stillwater yesterday...it appeared removing the blinders had made a huge difference...now I fear that the coaches will, in defiance of Carlson, dump Zac like they did Donovan and align their allegiance back to Reid. That will be a mistake if it happens. Woman's intuition, even if that's all it was, on Jenni's part might be worth paying attention to, coaches and fans. Actually, I think Carlson identified a serious problem. I had hoped it was in the process of being repaired. The problem with Reid? I don't know just what it is, but it's kind of like any other problem. You have to admit you have one before you can overcome it._____________________ Whoa! Don't waste your time and energy saying I must just be a big OU fan. I am not trashing OSU. I just happened to see it like Carlson did long before she printed her article. My thoughts have absolutely nothing to do with OU....it is really irrelevant to pull them into this whole scenario...again OU is not relevant when it comes to coaching/team problems at OSU. So, those hung up on OU need to throw that one out of the mix. This is not their problem....and it's a waste of time to try to make it so. Go Cowboys!
One thing that's interesting to note about Gundy's immature tirade is that he repeatedly focuses on Jenni Carlson's status as a woman -- in Mike's eyes she apparently isn't a "real" one because she hasn't submitted herself as breeding stock to someone somewhere yet. I can see how this would irritate Aggie Gundy, since the serial rapists that the OSU football squad seems to churn out on a regular basis year after year routinely get caught and prosecuted up in Stillwater. Misogyny would be my natural reaction, too, if my players year after year cost me games because they couldn't restrain themselves. How pitiful is that? Quite, I'd say.
It will be interesting to see how OSU does when they begin facing teams that actually have a defense. I mean this was the most boring thing I've watched in a while. Neither team had a single ounce of defense. "The greatest offense in the world" isn't enough to win conference titles. You must also control the defensive side of the game.
Jason, grow up. You're acting like a politician. If it isn't your party, you don't like it. You are the only OU fan on this that is demeaning Gundy and OSU. You are pathetic, get over yourself. As for Jenni, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!! You are the reason I hate the media, all you guys do is take the bad parts of the story and spin them to make them worse. You need to grow up as well. Watching Gundy put her in her place made the win so much sweeter. GO GUNDY!!! GO POKES!!!
The fact that the entire press conference consisted of Gumby's over the top Oscar winning performance is laughable. No doubt Boone Daddy was behind that little dog and pony show. It's unfortunate that Gumby chose to ignore the win and focus on an insignificant news article.
Berry I thought you supported the COWBOYS, but apparently not. You and Jenni need to go, we are tired of your constant OU support and lack of OSU spirit.
Sort of a backhanded compliment to the Cowboys....come on, you can do better than this, Berry.......give the Cowboys some credit. They played a great game and this article makes it seem like you were for the Raiders.
Wow jenni carlson how low can you seriously get. First u write a critical article and then disable comments because you can't take the heat. Look who is the baby now. I hope your proud of yourself. I hope your proud of beating up on a college kid who has done nothing to shame the program off the field, unlike some others. And Jason, u missed another thing constant in oklahoma: OU cheating and breaking the rules.
Watching Cowboy fans snivel always puts in a frame of mind to suggest to the President of OSU that he change the school "fight song" from whatever forgettable silliness it currently is to "Cry Me a River, Cry Me a River..." That seems a much more appropriate school "fight song"...
OU fans take notice next time ya'll wine besause a ref. didn't let a call go your way you all are the real pros at wining ya'll have a call to wine about in every game win lose or draw
Jason, no one cares what you think. How about you stop embarrassing yourself with your idiotic comments? You can't even punctuate the word "ya'll" correctly. That's embarrassing.
I wonder how long it'll be before the obligatory Cowpoke fan masquerading as a Sooner will show up and tell us that she is an OU fan who "agrees" with Gundy's childish rant. Probably not long--dishonesty is another thing that seems to go hand in hand with being a Poke.
I wonder if Jenni has requested immunity from reader "thoughts". I noticed she is now above return commentary. Times would seem to be a little tough for her. She appears to be down on her luck. Maybe her mom is feeding her something?
Except for my time in the service, I've lived my entire life in Oklahoma, and there have been two constants: the Oklahoma wind, and the chronic crybaby whining of OSU Cowboy fans, coaches, and even most players. Seriously, y'all, it's not the rest of Oklahoma's fault that you guys have no class in either victory or defeat. Please quit embarrassing the rest of us. Thanks.
It is easy for her to hide behind a pen, unlike these athletes who have to not only study game plans but also keep up with their college workload. It does not matter whether these PEOPLE are call kids or adults they are still HUMAN BEINGS. GO COACH!!!!
Berry pass this to Jenni if she is still there - There is a new sheriff in town called Pistol Pete and he is tired of your one sided crap against OSU - GET OUT OF TOWN.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful!! Words can't describe how happy I am about Gundy standing up for his squad. Go Pokes!! And to the OU fans with positive comments, THANKS!
Coach Gundy, that was awesome how you defended your player! Carlson is a tool whose journalism skills are better suited for magazines like the Enquirer.
Mike Gundy is a silly little low-class whiner--his moronic tirade about some "mean" column by a sports writer would have been laughable, were it not so pathetic. I'd be ashamed to a Cowboy fan tonight.
Coming from a OU homer Gundy pulled a GREAT win off. Congrats!! Even more important he put jenny carlson in her place. She is a disgrace. You earned alot of respect today Mr. Gundy! As a coach but more importantly as a man. My hat is off.
I am PROUD to be an OSU fan tonight. Just as you were probably proud to be an OU fan when your coach and president got mad about the Oregon loss last year. Keep up the work Mike!! GO POKES!!!
