Negotiating a better deal
Americans need to get rid of their aversion to negotiating prices, said Ed Brodow, 39, author of "Negotiating Boot Camp: How to Resolve Conflict.”

"There's a lot of things we're not comfortable with, and that's something you have to get over as an adult,” Brodow said.

One way to get a company to lower its price is to ask for a reduced price on items with defects or last year's model. Brodow calls this saving face. "They have to maintain the integrity of their price structure,” Brodow said.

He said stores must sell items at the same price for everyone, but if the product has a defect, the store might sell it at a reduced price.
