Seedling of poisoned Auburn oak being planted
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — A seedling of one of the storied oak trees poisoned at Auburn University is being planted during a special ceremony in Hoover.
Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/VmlmaA ) Auburn fans were invited to the Saturday planting ceremony at Aldridge Gardens, a 30-acre public garden in Hoover. The seedling was donated by Eddie Aldridge, the garden's founder.
The seedling comes from one of the Toomer's Corner oak trees that were poisoned during Auburn's run to the national championship in the 2010 football season. Auburn fans traditionally rolled the trees with toilet paper after a win.
The university is removing the trees, saying the poison all but killed them.
University of Alabama fan Harvey Updyke is scheduled to stand trial in April on charges including criminal mischief and desecrating a venerable object.
