When you hear the word "hammock,” do you think of long, lazy summer afternoons, a good book and a tall glass of lemonade? If you do, you've got the right idea. This do-it-yourself hammock frame project is a fun and easy way to turn your thoughts into reality.

Made entirely of straight-grain Douglas fir, the project is sturdy, comfortable, safe and attractive. It's also portable, so you can put your warm-weather retreat wherever you want it.

Easy enough for beginners, the hammock frame calls mostly for straight cuts and requires only basic construction techniques. To build, simply measure, cut out and sand the pieces. Next, assemble the project using carriage and lag bolts, and apply your choice of finish. Finally, add a hammock (a mail-order source for a hammock is included on the plan), pour the lemonade and let the siesta begin.

Designed to fit a standard-size hammock, the completed project measures 16 feet long by 4 feet wide.

The Hammock Frame plan, No. 868, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step directions with photos, detailed construction diagrams, shopping list, cutting schedule and a toll-free phone number to call with project questions.

A package of porch furniture plans, No. C154, is $24.95 and includes plans for two porch rockers and a porch swing that nicely complement the hammock frame. A free catalog picturing dozens of do-it-yourself projects is also available. Please include $4 for postage and handling. Allow about two weeks for delivery.
