Sen. Coburn reports money-losing medical practice

Sen. Tom Coburn has costs but not income from trying to keep his hand in medicine.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Coburn lost nearly $11,000 on his medical practice last year, the result of paying malpractice insurance and not charging the few patients he still sees.

Coburn, R-Muskogee, was forced by Senate ethics rules to end his financial relationship with a practice he shared with other doctors, but he has been determined to keep his hand in medicine, even though it means losing money. Because of his Senate duties, he sees only a few patients and those visits are sporadic.

The loss of $10,945 that Coburn took in 2009 was listed on the annual financial disclosure form that he filed last week; a Coburn spokeswoman confirmed that the senator still pays malpractice premiums but doesn’t charge fees to patients.

Coburn was still in the black last year, despite his out-of-pocket costs to keep his medical skills up: He listed assets valued between $1.2 million and $4.6 million, and income from dividends, interest, capital gains, rent and royalties between $28,400 and $123,000.
