Oklahoma Sen. Harry Coates was arrested Thursday night in northeast Texas on a complaint of driving while intoxicated, a sheriff’s department official said.
Coates, R-Seminole, was arrested in Howe, Texas, and was booked into jail in Grayson County, Texas, said Lt. Rickey Wheeler, a spokesman for the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.
Coates, 63, was released on bail about 4 a.m. Friday, Wheeler said. Howe is about 40 miles south of Durant.
In 2009, Coates filed a bill that would have stiffened penalties against those convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. Senate Bill 1014 also was known as the Brandon Burgett Act, in memory of a relative of Coates’ who was killed by a drunken driver in 2008.
