In the wake of the NBA franchise owner Donald Sterling's racial comments, fifty members of the Senate have signed a letter to the NFL to urge its leadership to put more pressure on the Washington Redskins to change the team name.
The willingness of lawmakers to sign a formal request to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has taken the fight for the name change to new levels.
From the New York Times' report, Senator Maria Cantwell, Democrat of Washington, called the Senate's letter to the league "An important milestone."
“We are going to find out if the N.F.L. can act against this kind of discrimination as quickly as the N.B.A. did," Cantwell said.
