A Muslim professor at Oklahoma City University hopes to share the custom of Ramadan fasting with others. Mohamed Daadaoui is spearheading the first Islam Day at OCU on Thursday.

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, is one of the five pillars, or obligations, of Islam. Observant Muslims abstain from food, drink and sensual pleasures from dawn to sunset during the month, which commemorates the divine revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.

Daadaoui said he created iFast, an initiative encouraging OCU students, faculty and staff to abstain from eating lunch on Islam Day. He said they will be encouraged to donate the money they would have spent on the meal to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Volunteers in the student center will accept these donations and hand out educational information about Islam.

Daadaoui, 32, said Muslims are encouraged to donate to charitable causes during Ramadan, and this is a way iFast participants may do the same.

The one-day fast and other related projects are designed to share more information about Islam with the OCU and the community at large.
