SHAWNEE — The second annual Southern Winds Film Festival kicks off today in downtown Shawnee, offering a showcase for 78 short and feature films by independent artists — including one that was dropped from a Muskogee film festival this spring over a preview that appeared on YouTube.

"A Beautiful Day (For the Lord's Work),” described by director Adam Hampton's Outsiders Productions as a horror film with religious overtones, was pulled from Muskogee's Bare Bones Film Festival in April when the Muskogee Police Department and the FBI investigated whether the film's trailer, which appeared on YouTube, was a terror threat.

In the trailer, a message appeared over images of dark forests: "People of Muskogee. Open your eyes. April 25th is a day you'll come to remember. The end is coming.” Investigators determined there was no intent of wrongdoing, with a Muskogee Police Department spokesman reporting that it was "meant as a publicity stunt, and it just went bad.”

Now, Hampton said he is pleased to have a chance to show "A Beautiful Day” at Southern Winds. The film will be shown at 9 p.m. Friday at the festival's outdoor venue, at the Main Street and Broadway in downtown Shawnee.

"It's always great to show our films to our hometown,” Hampton said in a prepared statement. "There were several people from Shawnee that were involved in the shooting on this project and who support our endeavors on a larger scale, so this is a chance for them to experience our work and enjoy the product.”

The Southern Winds Film Festival continues through Saturday and will take place at the outdoor venue, the Hornbeck Theatre at 125 N Bell, the Ritz Theatre at 10 W Main, and the Santa Fe Depot at 614 E Main. For a full list of films and more information, go online to southernwindsfilmfestival.com.
