SHAWNEE — A Shawnee man killed himself after a standoff with police Wednesday morning, police said.

The state medical examiner’s office identified the man as James L. Shockley, 71.

The medical examiner did not release his cause and manner of death.

Police Chief Russell Frantz said officers responded about 9:30 a.m. to a call of shots fired at a garage at 608 W Dewey Street. They were met by a man pointing a gun at them and yelling obscenities.

"He didn’t want to talk,” Frantz said.

After repeated unsuccessful attempts to negotiate or communicate with the man, Frantz said, officers fired tear gas into the garage.

"A single shot rang out,” Frantz said. "We waited. Fired another gas round in. Waited. And then moved in and found the subject had committed suicide.” has disabled the comments for this article.
