Dinner and a movie can have a lot of meanings, but at Shogun Steakhouse of Japan in Oklahoma City, dinner is the show.
General manager Yasushi Kitazawa said the restaurant has been delighting customers with delicious food and entertaining cooks for almost 28 years.
"We started up in 1981 at 50th and Meridian, but we moved to Northpark Mall in 1999," he said.
Shogun is a Japanese steakhouse, where the food is prepared right in front of the customers on a teppanyaki table. The chefs — skilled with knives and jokes — chop, sear and serve a variety of dishes to those seated around the grill table.
The fare runs the gamut from different cuts of steak to chicken, seafood and vegetables. One thing that's not on the menu, however, is sushi.
"A lot of people ask us about sushi, because we're a Japanese restaurant," Kitazawa said. "We tried to bring sushi to Oklahoma City back in the '80s. We brought a master sushi chef up from Dallas. But at the time, nobody in the area was interested in eating sushi."
Instead, Shogun concentrated on combining top-notch ingredients, savvy chefs and a fun atmosphere to bring in the customers.
Value, especially in a down economy, also is important, he said.
"We are holding off on raising prices as best we can," Kitazawa said. "We provide a pretty big meal for anywhere from $13 to $30."
Unlike some steakhouses, entrees come with a lot more than just meat. In every dinner, diners get a bowl of Japanese clear broth soup, salad with ginger dressing, hibachi shrimp for an appetizer and fresh grilled vegetables. Customers also can choose between complimentary steamed rice or upgrade to fried rice. There's even a palate cleansing ice cream at the end of the meal.
