Some families are taking advantage of the savings to purchase other needed goods.

Stacy Gerken, along with her husband and children were mostly shopping for back-to-school clothes, but said she'd like to also purchase backpacks and a watch with the money she's saving on the clothing items.

Penn Square Mall, Quail Springs Mall and Sooner Mall in Norman are offering extended hours during the weekend. Some stores in the Outlet Shoppes — extended their hours as well to accommodate tax holiday shoppers.

With the extended hours, “shoppers can make the most out of the special shopping incentives offered from our large selection of popular retailers,” Penn Square Mall Manager Jeff Dozier said.

For some, the event was a chance to spend time with family.

Raeann Spurlock and her granddaughters came to Oklahoma City from Lawton and Okemah to shop at several different stores from Shoe Carnival to Wal-Mart and the mall.
