Crossed signals
OSU beat writer Andrea Cohen and columnist John Rohde debate whether college games should be played off campus:

Andrea: I am very, very excited about going to Seattle this week. Considerably more excited than I would be if we were heading to Pullman. That said, I'm not a fan of these games played away from college campuses. Your thoughts, Mr. Rohde?

John: You've picked the wrong league for this argument, Miss Cohen, because Oklahoma vs. Texas in Dallas is as good as it gets. Many have to tried to emulate it, but to no avail. An occasional home game away from campus allows a school to share its product.

Andrea: Even though I've never been there to see it, I will give you the exception of the Red River Rivalry as a great neutral-site game. But that's because it's actually a neutral site, and now there's some great tradition involved. Oklahoma State and Washington State in Seattle? Not so neutral, not so much tradition. College football is supposed to be all about tradition — the band, the crazy student section, making your way back to the old college stomping grounds. That all goes out the window when you're playing in NFL stadiums in cities hundreds of miles from the university.

John: If you took a quick poll of OSU and WSU players this week, I would guess roughly 100 percent of them — maybe more — can't wait to play at Qwest Field. The fans don't seem to mind the NFL palaces, either. For many involved, especially the players, it's a rare chance to live the high life.

Andrea: Then what's the point in schools spending zillions of dollars building and renovating stadiums? Atmosphere is what makes college football unique. Moving games away from colleges removes the tradition, pomp and circumstance that college fans love.

John: The key is moderation. It's wise to spread the interest of your program, but it's absolutely wrong to rob your own campus from special Saturdays too frequently.

Recruting? WRONG! It's about money. Renaming Memorial Stadium to hounor GAYlord’s is a perfect example.

Here's the point as far as WSU is concerned.... UW is in Seattle or Tacoma or somewhere in there where all the people are.... WSU is over the mountains and out in the farming areas... this is a chance to be seen by the city folks and a lot of city football playing high schoolers.... it's RECRUITING!
